NATIONAL TEEN LEADERSHIP PROGRAM RECEIVES
AWARD FROM SENATOR BOXER
Sacramento, CA:– On Saturday, March 11, United States Senator, Barbara Boxer presented her Excellence in Education Award to The National Teen Leadership Program (NTLP). Senator Boxer established the award to recognize teachers, parents and organizations that are working to make positive changes in education. Since 1997, Senator Boxer has presented the Excellence in Education Award to only 38 organizations.
The Proclamation from Senator Boxer was presented by 1993 Alumni, Vincent Jones, who is one of five Field Representative’s for the Senator.
Forty Alumni, including two alumni from as far back as 1992, local politicians, board members, guests and friends celebrated the achievement. Proclamations and commendations were presented on behalf of California’s United States Representative Doris O. Matsui of the 5th Congressional District (Sacramento), Mayor Heather Fargo and the Council of the City of Sacramento, the City of Elk Grove, and by Councilman Don Saylor (Davis), and County Supervisor Don Nottoli (Sacramento).
Other dignitaries included: Maj Gen William Wade, Adjutant General for the California National Guard, Assist. Commissioner Arthur Anderson, California Highway Patrol, and Executive Vice President Joseph Sheley, CSU Sacramento.
Since 1992, NTLP has conducted over 35 leadership training programs for high school students and helped more than 7,500 young adults prepare for career leadership roles. NTLP has also presented more than $160,000 in scholarship awards. Hundreds of alumni have returned to staff each summer for the past 15 years.
“I feel fairly certain that no other youth program can claim such dedicated alumni.” Said Laura Segura, NTLP Chairperson and CEO. “There must be something very special about this program for so many alumni to stay a part of our organization for so many years. Maybe it was a favorite speaker or workshop or the support or inspiration they received from the teens they met. It’s hard to say; I just know this program makes a profound difference in our youth. ”
The California National Guard has been a strong supporter of NTLP for nearly 11 years. Over 500 youth from guard-related programs and the sons and daughters of guardsmen have been sponsored by the Guard to attend NTLP. The Guard also helps with staffing, printing and other forms of support – “a very small investment for such a large return. “ Said guest speaker, Maj Gen Bill Wade. “NTLP is one of the best investments we can make in the future of our country; because we are molding and educating future leaders of the world. NTLP is probably the cheapest insurance policy this country could ever have to indemnify us against internal domestic problems.”
Kathy White, parent of four-time alumni, Pierce White, says “I have spent my own life trying to make a positive difference, one way or another, in other people’s lives. Currently, I am president of the local elementary school board. I have 3,400 young people depending on me to make good decisions for them. I bring this up only as a qualifier that I know what ‘making a difference’ looks like. I cannot tell you how impressed I am with NTLP and the huge difference they make.”
To celebrate its 15-year anniversary, NTLP is returning to the site of its first program in 1992, CSU Sacramento. They will have room for just 250 high school students during the program weekend, August 4-6, and 50 students have already registered to attend. The National Teen Leadership Program is a 501(c)3 non- profit corporation.
